For some inexplicable reason (well, we could try but it would take a while), the boys usually get to talking about some obscure and scientifically complex issue over Action curries.
These include:
- What makes stickytape stick?
Argument: Friction, not chemistry
- Can you travel through time?
Argument: if you had two trains, each travelling at half the speed of light...
- How much does energy weigh?
Argument: does a battery weigh less when it is flat?
|
Other topics that are discussed from time to time are:
- Environmentally sustainable living:
solar and wind energy, straw bale building
- How much toilet paper is really necessary?
- Why don't we put all this on the internet?
We could call it actioncurry.com...
Stay tuned for details of these fascinating investigations
into life, the universe and everything...
Science topic of the month
Our most recent science discussions were mainly biology related:
- Banana: fruit or herb?
I'm not entirely sure how this one started, or what the results were.
Update: apparently it is both or neither, depending on how you look at it.
I wish someone had known this at dinner, we could have argued about it for hours.
Who knew that "although referred to as banana trees, they are not trees at all but a perennial herb"?
Or that the banana itself is sterile (those little seeds inside do nothing), and that "the banana... is botanically classified as a berry"?
Check out the article Bananas are a giant mutant herb
- Lettuce: Living or non-living?
This dilemma was faced by a Grade 3 teacher who attended our recent curry night at ANII. The answer is simple, right? Not so, according to a whole bunch of 7 year olds. Argument: salads. (Bet they would've gone nuts over the banana issue)
